Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) allows for students to be recognized for both admission and credit equivalency purposes towards Acadia Programs based upon previous professional, cultural, and/or lived experiences and learning. The University recognizes that knowledge, skills, and abilities can be acquired through various experiences (formal, informal, and non-formal) as well as demonstrated in varying ways.

If a student believes that their prior learning experiences should be considered for admission and/or credit towards Acadia courses, they can apply for PLAR.

Turn Military Experience into Academic Credit

Acadia University and CFB Greenwood are collaborating through education for active members and their families, those transitioning out of military careers, CAF veteran retirees, as well as support personnel. Active or retired military and support personnel, or their family members, may receive academic credit towards program completion for formal academic training as transfer credits, or via Acadia’s Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) assessments which recognize formal or informal experiences gained through work, life, or volunteer activities. In addition, given the breadth of experiences and professional learning development that military personnel have, Acadia University agrees to formally recognize Military Personnel Record Resumes (MPRRs) for potential credit towards an academic program. As MPRRs contain very specialized skills and learning experiences outside of the normal scope of either transfer or PLAR, Acadia University agrees to partner with, and subsequently recognize, MPRR assessment(s) performed by the University of Manitoba’s Military Support Office (MSO). Total allowable credits from the transfer, PLAR and MPRRs cannot exceed 50% of a degree program.
