Bosom Friends and Yellow Brick Roads: The Girls of Classic Children’s Stories
Dr. Laura Robinson
In this course, students will examine the representation of girlhood in four classic children’s novels from the period often referred to as the Golden Age of Children’s Literature: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Anne of Green Gables, and The Secret Garden. Students will analyze the construction of the girl through each novel’s deployment of place, race, empire, class, and, of course, gender.
