An Environmental History Walking Tour of Wolfville

What if the stage is part of the play? We normally think of the natural world merely as the stage on which human history unfolds. But we now realize that the environment plays very important roles in the history of a community, affecting the human decisions that, taken together over time, form the foundation of our shared histories.

This Acadia Lifelong Learning session will take us on an environmental history walking tour of Wolfville, beginning at Acadia's Beveridge Arts Centre and ending at the Wolfville Harbour (there are no hills!). As we proceed, we will explore the powerful effects of past environments, and environmental events, on the history of Wolfville. Along the way we will learn how Acadia nearly collapsed because of a storm; how apples shaped the development, character, and urban layout of Wolfville, and did so almost by accident; how more recent transportation decisions and policies may have to be re-visited; and how we may respond locally and regionally to the present and future challenges of a climate-changing world.
