History of Women in Canada

Carollee Pollock

Let’s examine the history of women in Canada both before and after Confederation. We will begin with First Nations women at the time of contact with the European invaders and continue through an examination of women’s lives in New France, in the fur trade, and in British North America before dealing with women in the nation of Canada. In each of these contexts, we will develop a fuller understanding of how women negotiated and challenged the roles, expectations and demands set out for them by the societies in which they lived.
